Pope Leo XIV Declared Cancer-Free After Lung Surgery, Doctors Rule Out Further Treatment

Medical tests confirm the pontiff’s lung cancer was localized, offering reassuring news about his recovery as he resumes public engagements at the Vatican.

Pope Leo XIV has received encouraging news about his health, with medical evaluations confirming that his lung cancer was localized and that he does not require further cancer treatment following surgery.

The announcement marks a significant milestone in the recovery of the 71-year-old pontiff, who underwent an operation to remove a cancerous lung nodule.

According to a statement from his personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, and his surgeon, Professor Stefano Margaritora, subsequent medical assessments found no need for additional oncological therapy.

“A subsequent oncological evaluation has confirmed that no further therapy is required,” the doctors said.

The medical team’s assessment provides reassurance about the Pope’s condition following his diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer.

The pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for surgery after doctors discovered a lung nodule. On October 13, surgeons performed a 90-minute procedure to remove the lower lobe of his right lung.

He was discharged from the hospital four days after the operation and reportedly paused to greet well-wishers as he left the facility.

Following his discharge, Pope Leo XIV returned to the Vatican, where he has continued his recovery while gradually resuming his public duties.

On Wednesday, he held his first weekly general audience at St. Peter’s Square since the operation, marking a notable step in his return to public engagements.

The development is expected to bring relief to Catholics and other well-wishers around the world who have followed updates on the pontiff’s health.

Although his doctors have ruled out the need for further cancer treatment based on the latest evaluation, continued medical follow-up may form part of his recovery and ongoing care.

For now, the medical update offers welcome reassurance as Pope Leo XIV recovers from surgery and returns to his responsibilities at the Vatican.
