“UN Must Probe Oriire Abduction” — Makinde Demands Global Investigation Into 56-Day School Kidnap Ordeal

Oyo governor seeks independent international scrutiny of abduction and rescue, vows accountability and full support for traumatised pupils and teachers.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on the United Nations (UN) and global human rights organisations to launch an independent investigation into the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, declaring that the incident raises serious questions that cannot be overlooked.

Speaking on Monday in Ibadan after receiving the rescued victims, Makinde insisted that Nigerians deserve a full, transparent account of what transpired during both the abduction and the eventual rescue. He urged international accountability bodies to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident to establish the truth and ensure justice is served.

According to the governor, any credible probe must uncover those responsible for the kidnapping, determine whether there were institutional failures, negligence, or possible collusion, and assess steps being taken to prevent a recurrence. He stressed that under the Constitution, responsibility for national security lies squarely with the Federal Government and its security agencies.

Makinde dismissed any political undertone to his demand, maintaining that his position is driven solely by the need to secure justice for the victims, reassure affected families, and rebuild public confidence in Nigeria’s security architecture.

His remarks followed the formal handover of the rescued pupils and teachers to the Oyo State Government by the military after 56 days in captivity. The governor confirmed that the state has assumed full responsibility for their rehabilitation, including medical treatment, psychological care, and ensuring their education and professional lives continue without disruption.

Makinde also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting all lawful measures aimed at strengthening security and safeguarding schools across Oyo State.
