Crash on Lokoja–Okene Road triggers massive fireball, kills soldiers and civilians as emergency teams battle inferno and launch probe.
At least six people have been confirmed dead following a devastating explosion involving a gas-laden truck at an army checkpoint along the Lokoja–Okene Road in Kogi State on Tuesday night.
Emergency responders and security officials said the truck reportedly lost control before crashing near the checkpoint, sparking a powerful explosion that engulfed nearby vehicles and sent panic through motorists and residents in the area.
The blast killed both military personnel and civilians on the spot, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care. Firefighters and other emergency agencies battled the raging flames for hours to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
Authorities have since launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash and explosion. Meanwhile, security operatives cordoned off the area, disrupting traffic along the busy highway as rescue and recovery efforts continued.
