Football governing bodies launch governance, legal and electoral review as joint assessment mission prepares to visit Abuja

FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have suspended the ongoing electoral process of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) indefinitely, citing the need to assess the leadership and governance crisis currently engulfing Nigerian football.

The decision follows the resignation of the NFF President, members of the Executive Committee and the General Secretary, developments that have raised fresh questions about the federation’s leadership structure and the future of its electoral process.

In a joint intervention aimed at stabilising the situation, FIFA and CAF said no further action, decision or procedure connected to the NFF election should be undertaken until their assessment is concluded.

The suspension means that the electoral process cannot proceed until the two international football governing bodies complete their review and determine the appropriate next steps.

As part of the interim arrangements, NFF Deputy General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, has been designated as the principal point of contact between the NFF and FIFA and CAF.

FIFA and CAF said they are conducting a comprehensive assessment covering the legal, governance, administrative and electoral aspects of the crisis within the NFF.

The review is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the resignations and determine whether the federation's current processes and proposed electoral arrangements are consistent with the statutes and regulations governing Nigerian and international football.

A joint FIFA and CAF assessment mission will also be dispatched to Abuja at the earliest opportunity.

During the visit, the delegation is expected to meet with NFF administrators and other key stakeholders in Nigerian football, as well as members of the relevant electoral bodies.

Representatives of the Federal Government, including officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC), are also expected to participate in the discussions.

The intervention comes at a sensitive time for Nigerian football, with uncertainty surrounding the federation's leadership and the direction of the electoral process.

FIFA and CAF, however, stressed that no decision has been made on possible sanctions or any other disciplinary or administrative measures against the NFF or its stakeholders.

Any further action, according to the football bodies, will depend on the outcome of their ongoing assessment.

The suspension is therefore being viewed as a temporary measure to prevent further complications while FIFA and CAF seek a clearer understanding of the crisis and work with relevant Nigerian stakeholders to establish a way forward.

The latest development could have significant implications for the leadership transition at the NFF, particularly as the federation prepares for a new electoral cycle.

FIFA regulations generally require member associations to conduct their affairs independently and in accordance with their approved statutes, while also ensuring that electoral processes are transparent and compliant with established rules.

The planned FIFA-CAF mission is expected to provide an opportunity for all sides involved in the dispute to present their positions and clarify the circumstances surrounding the current impasse.

Until the assessment is completed, the NFF electoral process remains on hold, leaving the immediate future of the federation's leadership uncertain.

The situation also places renewed attention on the relationship between the NFF, the Federal Government and international football authorities, particularly on the need to resolve the crisis without breaching the governing principles of FIFA and CAF.
