Banker was taking his children to the university when gunmen attacked; two female students reportedly abducted

Polaris Bank is mourning the death of one of its branch managers, identified as Mr. Ossy, who was allegedly shot dead by suspected kidnappers during an attack at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Imo State.

The banker, who was based in Owerri, was reportedly taking his children to the university when he was accosted by the gunmen.

According to the bank, his children escaped from the scene, but the manager was shot dead.

Two female FUTO students were also reportedly abducted during the incident.

In a statement signed by its Head of Brand Management and Corporate Communication, Rasheed Bolarinwa, Polaris Bank expressed deep sadness over the killing and extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues.

The bank said the incident was being investigated by the relevant law enforcement agencies and urged the public to allow the authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.

FUTO management also confirmed that a visitor was fatally shot on the university campus during the incident and that two female students were reportedly abducted.

The university’s Registrar, Chinonso Uba, said the institution was working with security agencies to secure the safe recovery of the abducted students, while additional security measures were being implemented across the university and its host communities.

Following the incident, FUTO management met with the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, over growing security concerns around the institution.

Bosso assured the university of intensified security operations around the institution and neighbouring areas, including Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, Obinze and Nekede.

The university also urged students and staff to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary movement and promptly report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

The police had yet to announce any arrest in connection with the killing and reported abduction as of the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, FUTO management warned students against organising unruly gatherings or protests, citing its existing ban on rowdy activities and conduct capable of threatening the safety and security of the university community.
