Army Smashes Suspected Arms Syndicate in Abia, Arrests Three in Intelligence-Led Raid

Troops recover seven dane guns, 22 cartridges as intelligence-led operation targets illegal arms trade in Arochukwu

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade have arrested three suspected arms dealers and recovered weapons during a targeted cordon-and-search operation in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State.

The early morning raid, carried out on Sunday, June 7, 2026, forms part of Operation Eastern Sanity II — an ongoing military campaign aimed at curbing the spread of illegal arms and strengthening security across the South-East.

In a statement by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 14 Brigade, Mazinho Attah, the operation was executed by personnel from the 14 Brigade Garrison and the 14 Military Intelligence Regiment, working in close coordination with other security agencies. The mission followed credible intelligence pointing to active arms trafficking in Amaetiti Iheshiowa community.

Three suspects — Francis Ifere (37), Oso Kalu (40), and Ifere Oti (32) — were apprehended during the raid.

Security forces recovered seven locally made dane guns, 22 live cartridges, and a motorcycle believed to have been used in the suspects’ operations. A bus linked to one Stephen Kalu, who reportedly fled before the troops arrived, was also impounded.

The Army said the operation reflects intensified efforts across its formations, with increased night patrols, surveillance, and coordinated security sweeps designed to limit criminal activity and protect communities.

Describing the arrests and seizures as a major breakthrough, the military reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling illegal arms networks and restoring lasting peace in the region.
