Chelsea, Manchester clubs, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid battle for highly rated 18-year-old defender set to switch allegiance to Italy.
Ahead of the summer transfer window, Nigerian-born Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor is attracting significant interest across Europe, with Arsenal reportedly tabling a £30 million bid for the 18-year-old centre-back.
The Gunners face stiff competition from Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Atletico Madrid, all of whom have registered strong interest in the highly rated youngster.
Ahanor is viewed as a long-term defensive investment, fitting Arsenal’s well-established pathway for developing young talent — similar to the progress of Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.
Manchester City are said to be adopting a similar long-term approach, while Chelsea are exploring a structure that could see Ahanor signed and immediately loaned back to Atalanta to continue his development.
Atletico Madrid are also considered serious contenders. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, manager Diego Simeone is particularly impressed by Ahanor’s anticipation, physical strength and ability to win individual duels.
The teenager has amassed over 1,500 minutes in 24 appearances across all competitions for Atalanta this season, including outings in the UEFA Champions League.
Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, Ahanor was previously registered as Nigerian due to immigration regulations. However, having recently turned 18, he has now been cleared to represent Italy at senior level and is expected to switch his international allegiance from Nigeria to Italy.
