Ugandan and Pakistani boxers among those unaccounted for as authorities probe possible asylum intentions following the tournament

Several athletes have been reported missing following the conclusion of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, prompting Police Scotland to launch an investigation in collaboration with UK immigration authorities.

Police confirmed receiving reports that a number of competitors failed to return home with their respective national teams after the tournament ended. Among those unaccounted for are four Ugandan boxers—Nuhu Batte, Angel Katushabe, Ibrahim Kemis, and Emily Nakalema—as well as Pakistani boxer Qudratullah, who reportedly did not travel back with his delegation.

According to Ugandan sports outlet NBS Sport, one of the missing athletes indicated that the group intended to seek asylum in Scotland while pursuing their boxing careers, citing better training opportunities abroad. The athlete reportedly appealed for understanding from Ugandans, though Team Uganda has declined to comment on the situation.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said inquiries are ongoing, adding that the force is working closely with the UK Home Office to establish the circumstances surrounding the disappearances.

Games organisers also confirmed they are collaborating with Police Scotland, Border Force, and UK Visas and Immigration to ensure all protocols are followed as the event concludes.

The development echoes similar incidents at previous Commonwealth Games, including the 2014 edition in Glasgow, where several athletes went missing after the competition, with some later seeking asylum or remaining in the United Kingdom.

UK authorities have stated that any asylum applications arising from the latest cases will be assessed individually, based on available evidence and the merits of each claim.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded on Sunday after 11 days of competition, featuring approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories. Organisers described the scaled-down event as a success after Glasgow stepped in as host following the withdrawal of the original host city.
