Fresh alignments gather momentum as sources say PDP stakeholders favour ADC over APC, while Wike’s Rivers influence faces uncertainty
Fresh political realignments may be underway within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, as reports emerging Tuesday evening indicate that Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde are set to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to a source familiar with the development, the two governors are not alone in the planned move, as several influential PDP stakeholders and loyalists are also preparing to switch allegiance to the ADC. The development, if confirmed, could signal a major shift in the balance of power within the opposition bloc ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The source disclosed that a growing number of PDP members are increasingly inclined toward the ADC, viewing it as a more viable political platform compared to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This preference, insiders say, is driven by ongoing internal disputes within the PDP and concerns over the party’s cohesion and electoral prospects.
“There is a strong sentiment among many PDP figures that the ADC offers a fresh alternative and a more stable ground to rebuild,” the source said, adding that consultations and strategic meetings have intensified in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, the report also points to a perceived decline in the political influence of former Rivers State governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. Once regarded as a formidable power broker, Wike is said to be facing challenges in maintaining his grip on Rivers State politics, particularly in efforts to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT).
It was noted that shifting loyalties within Rivers State and beyond may be contributing to a weakening of Wike’s political leverage, although no official statement has been made by his camp regarding the claims.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Governors Mohammed nor Makinde, nor the PDP leadership, have publicly confirmed the reported defections. However, it was suggest that any such move could have far-reaching implications for opposition unity and the broader political landscape as Nigeria inches closer to another election cycle.
