Nigerian striker addresses transfer speculation after being left out of Super Eagles friendlies, while European giants circle for summer move.
Chelsea FC have reportedly made initial contact over a potential move for Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, who currently plays for Turkish champions Galatasaray.
The Premier League club is said to have entered the race for the Nigerian forward, with Galatasaray placing a hefty €150 million valuation on the 27-year-old.
Reports gained traction following comments from Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who confirmed that Osimhen was left out of Nigeria’s squad for the June friendlies against Poland and Portugal due to ongoing transfer-related considerations.
“Victor Osimhen will not be in our friendly matches against Poland and Portugal because there may be a possibility of a club change,” Chelle said. “Therefore, I preferred him to stay at home. If your mind is not 100% here, going out on the field to play does not create a good situation.”
The remarks immediately sparked widespread speculation about Osimhen’s future.
However, the striker has since dismissed the claims, clarifying that Chelle’s comments were taken out of context.
“I just got off the phone with Coach Eric Chelle regarding the comments about me in his recent interview,” Osimhen said. “Although his words have been taken out of context and blown out of proportion, he has great respect for Galatasaray, follows most of our games, and never intended to create any controversy. I kindly ask everyone to disregard the speculation surrounding this matter.”
Despite Osimhen’s clarification, interest in the striker remains strong across Europe. He has previously been linked with Manchester United, where he is reportedly among the club’s top striker targets for the summer transfer window.
Sources indicate that Osimhen would only consider leaving if Galatasaray decide to sell.
Chelsea are now believed to have initiated preliminary talks, with expectations of a formal approach during the transfer window.
Galatasaray, however, have made their stance clear, insisting they will not accept any offer below €150 million for a player they signed from Napoli for €75 million.
Osimhen enjoyed another impressive season, scoring 15 league goals and providing five assists in 22 appearances as Galatasaray retained the Turkish Super Lig title. He also contributed seven goals and three assists in the UEFA Champions League, helping the club reach the round of 16.
