French superstar nets 10 goals at USA 2026, surpasses Messi and becomes first player to win back-to-back Golden Boots

Kylian Mbappé has etched his name deeper into football history, becoming the first player ever to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot twice after finishing as the top scorer at the 2026 tournament.

The 27-year-old France forward delivered a sensational campaign, scoring 10 goals in eight matches to outshine Argentina captain Lionel Messi and reclaim the award he first won at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Mbappé’s latest triumph also makes him the first player to win the Golden Boot in consecutive World Cups—an achievement that underscores his dominance on the global stage.

His 10-goal tally marks the first double-digit scoring feat in a men’s World Cup since Germany’s Gerd Müller hit 10 in 1970. Only Just Fontaine (13 goals in 1958) and Sándor Kocsis (11 goals in 1954) have scored more in a single edition.

The Real Madrid forward also climbed to the top of the all-time World Cup scoring chart with 22 goals, moving one clear of Messi. He overtook the Argentine legend after scoring twice in France’s dramatic 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff.

Mbappé’s goals came at every stage of the tournament, including braces against Senegal and Iraq in the group stage, another against Sweden in the round of 32, a decisive penalty against Paraguay in the round of 16, and a strike versus Morocco in the quarter-finals.

Messi had entered the final with a chance to surpass Mbappé but failed to score as Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain, ending his campaign with eight goals.

Elsewhere, England’s Jude Bellingham and Norway’s Erling Haaland finished with seven goals each, while Harry Kane and Ousmane Dembélé recorded six apiece.

Spain’s triumph was further highlighted by goalkeeper Unai Simón, who won the Golden Glove after conceding just once in eight matches and keeping seven clean sheets. The 29-year-old delivered a string of commanding performances to justify his selection as Spain lifted the World Cup trophy.
