Controversy in Oyo as Governor Makinde Installs 3 Obas Without Them Present

Governor proceeds with installation at Mapo Hall despite chiefs’ plea for postponement, igniting debate over tradition and legality

Controversy has gripped Ibadan following Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s decision to approve the coronation of three high-ranking chiefs as Obas—despite their absence from the ceremony.

The event, held at the historic Mapo Hall, saw Sharafadeen Alli, Oyekola Babalola, and Akeem Adewoyin elevated to royal status in what many have described as a highly unusual development in Ibadan’s traditional system.

Sources indicate that the affected chiefs had formally requested a postponement of the ceremony, citing their inability to attend. However, the state government moved ahead with the installation, disregarding their appeal.

Represented by his deputy, Governor Makinde defended the decision, stating that the action was backed by the Oyo State Chiefs Law and aimed at preserving the continuity of the traditional institution.

The deputy governor formally proclaimed the trio as Obas, effectively completing the coronation process without their physical presence.

The move has triggered widespread reactions, with critics labeling it unprecedented and raising concerns about the implications for Ibadan’s deeply rooted chieftaincy traditions. Many observers argue that the absence of the newly crowned monarchs undermines the cultural and symbolic significance of the coronation rite.

Despite the backlash, the state government insists that all legal procedures were followed and that the decision was necessary to prevent disruptions within the traditional hierarchy.
