Security operatives, backed by local youths, capture suspect in forest hideout; multiple shallow graves discovered as police intensify investigation.
Security operatives have arrested a suspected serial killer in a forest in Creektown, Cross River State, following a coordinated operation that led to the discovery of multiple shallow graves.
The suspect, identified as Akaninyene from Obot Akara, was apprehended by a joint team of military personnel and tactical police units after a tip-off directed them to a remote hut he allegedly constructed in the Abanyama area of Ukim Ita community.
The operation, which reportedly lasted two days, was supported by community youths and local leaders who helped security agents track the suspect’s movements within the dense forest.
An eyewitness said operatives found the suspect within the compound and overpowered him as he attempted to flee.
A subsequent search of the area uncovered several shallow graves. At least eight burial pits were exhumed, each reportedly containing multiple decomposing bodies. The graves had been concealed with crops planted over them, in what authorities suspect was an attempt to hide evidence.
Security sources said the suspect allegedly confessed during interrogation to killing about 30 people previously reported missing in the community. He also reportedly led investigators to the burial sites.
The latest alleged incident, said to have occurred on May 26, 2026, triggered renewed scrutiny after residents reported hearing distress sounds from the forest area.
The suspect further claimed that a female accomplice assisted in luring victims to the hideout and helping restrain them.
Local authorities, including ward officials and leaders in Odukpani Local Government Area, were instrumental in escalating the matter to security agencies after concerns were raised by residents.
Community leaders have commended the swift response of security forces and the vigilance of local youths, while residents have intensified searches in surrounding areas for any additional evidence or possible victims.
Police spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah confirmed the arrest, stating that investigations are ongoing and more details will be made public as the probe progresses.
