The Nigerian star won the Golden Boot and Golden Ball at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after scoring seven goals in Canada.

FIFA has celebrated Asisat Oshoala’s outstanding campaign at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, describing her seven-goal haul as one of the tournament’s defining individual performances.

The global football governing body recalled in a feature published on its website how Oshoala announced herself on the international stage by winning both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball after a series of impressive displays.

The Nigerian forward scored once in the group stage before netting twice against New Zealand in the quarter-final and four times against Korea DPR in the semi-final.

Nigeria eventually lost 1-0 to Germany in the final, but Oshoala’s individual brilliance earned her a place among the tournament’s top scorers.

Her seven goals rank fourth for a single edition of the competition, alongside Korea DPR’s Kim Un-Hwa, while Canada’s Christine Sinclair and Germany’s Alexandra Popp jointly hold the record with 10 goals each.

FIFA noted that the Canada 2014 tournament served as a springboard for Oshoala’s senior career.

Just two months later, she won her first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title with Nigeria and subsequently made her senior FIFA Women’s World Cup debut at Canada 2015, scoring against Sweden in a 3-3 draw.

Oshoala went on to feature at the 2019 and 2023 Women’s World Cups, scoring against Korea Republic and co-hosts Australia respectively.

Her goal against Australia in 2023 made her the first African player to score at three different editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

However, she missed out on a fourth appearance after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

At 31, Oshoala remains one of Africa’s most decorated female footballers. She has won the African Women’s Footballer of the Year award a record six times and lifted four WAFCON titles.

The forward has played for Liverpool, Arsenal, Dalian Quanjian, Barcelona and Bay FC. She currently represents Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal and has scored 40 goals in 74 appearances for Nigeria.
