Former world No. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam champion bows out after more than two decades, leaving a lasting legacy in British tennis.
Jamie Murray, former world No. 1 doubles player and seven-time Grand Slam champion, has announced his retirement from professional tennis.
Reports indicate that the 40-year-old British star confirmed the news in a post on Instagram, stating that his career, which spanned more than two decades at the top level of the sport, has come to an end.
“My tennis journey comes to an end after 36 years. I feel very fortunate and privileged for all the amazing experiences this great sport has given me,” he wrote.
“I played for 20 years at the top level and feel privileged for what I was able to do and experience on the court. I don’t have any regrets,” Murray added.
Murray, who last competed at the 2025 US Open, said he is now looking forward to a new chapter away from the court.
A doubles specialist, he reached the pinnacle of the game by becoming the first British player to achieve the world No. 1 ranking in men’s doubles.
Over the course of his career, he won 34 ATP doubles titles and seven Grand Slam crowns.
Two of those titles came alongside his younger brother, Andy Murray, with whom he also played a key role in Great Britain’s historic triumph at the 2015 Davis Cup — the nation’s first victory in the competition for 79 years.
He also enjoyed significant success in mixed doubles, winning five Grand Slam titles, including two at Wimbledon.
He partnered with Jelena Jankovic to victory in 2007 and later lifted the title again in 2017 with Martina Hingis.
Among his career highlights was a standout 2016 season with Brazilian partner Bruno Soares. The pair won both the Australian Open and US Open men’s doubles titles that year and finished as the world’s top-ranked team.
Off the court, Murray paid tribute to his family and support network, thanking his parents, his brother Andy, and his team for helping him achieve his ambitions in the sport.
Murray’s retirement marks the end of one of Britain’s most successful doubles careers.
