Attack in Zariagi near Lokoja leaves community shaken as authorities intensify search for remaining victims and question orphanage’s registration status
Gunmen have abducted 23 schoolchildren and the wife of an orphanage proprietor in a late-night attack on a school facility in Kogi State, sparking renewed concerns over security in the region.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when suspected armed men stormed the orphanage located in Zariagi, along the Kabba Junction axis of Lokoja, the state capital. The attackers reportedly overpowered the premises and whisked away the victims under the cover of darkness.
Confirming the development on Monday, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the attack as both “unfortunate and avoidable,” noting that authorities had already launched a coordinated rescue operation.
According to Fanwo, security agencies have so far rescued 15 of the 24 abducted victims, while efforts are ongoing to secure the safe release of the remaining captives.
He also disclosed that the orphanage involved was not registered with the state government, raising regulatory concerns even as the priority remains the safe recovery of those still in captivity.
“Fifteen pupils have been rescued following the swift intervention of security agencies, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims,” Fanwo stated.
The incident has heightened anxiety among residents of Lokoja and surrounding communities, with calls for stronger security measures and stricter monitoring of child care facilities across the state.
Authorities have assured the public that operations are ongoing and that no effort will be spared in ensuring all abducted victims are safely returned.
