Manchester City star scores twice after Nyland’s penalty heroics to seal historic 2-1 upset over five-time champions

Norway booked a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history after a stunning 2-1 victory over five-time champions Brazil in a Round of 16 clash in New Jersey on Sunday.

Erling Haaland struck twice in the second half to seal a famous win and send Brazil crashing out before the quarter-finals for the first time since 1990.

Brazil had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 15th minute, but Bruno Guimarães saw his penalty saved by goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland after Kristoffer Ajer fouled Matheus Cunha inside the box.

Nyland proved pivotal throughout the contest, producing a string of fine saves to deny Guimarães and Vinícius Júnior as Norway weathered sustained Brazilian pressure.

After holding firm, Norway broke the deadlock in the 79th minute when Haaland rose above Gabriel Magalhães to head home a precise cross from Andreas Schjelderup.

The Manchester City striker doubled the lead in the 90th minute with a powerful low strike from outside the penalty area, drawing level with Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi on seven goals in the race for the Golden Boot.

Brazil pulled one back deep into stoppage time when Neymar converted a penalty after a VAR review ruled that Leo Østigård had fouled Casemiro.

However, the late goal proved only a consolation as Norway held on to complete one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

Norway will now face the winner of the Round of 16 tie between England and Mexico in the quarter-finals, while Brazil’s campaign ends in disappointment despite entering the tournament as one of the favourites.
