Shake-up follows Tinubu’s appointment of Tunji Disu as new Inspector-General of Police amid wider restructuring within the Nigeria Police Force.
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has removed Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benjamin Hundeyin as the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), barely six months after he assumed the position.
Sources within the force stated that the decision was approved on Thursday morning as part of ongoing changes in the police leadership structure.
Although the exact reasons for the development remain unclear as of the time of filing this report, insiders confirmed that Hundeyin was relieved of his duties earlier on Thursday.
“The Force Public Relations Officer has been removed this morning,” a top police source confirmed.
The source added that it was still uncertain who would replace him as the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force.
“We don’t know yet who will take over from him. Many of us thought he would stay longer considering his experience and communication skills,” the source said.
The shake-up comes amid internal restructuring within the police hierarchy following the emergence of a new Inspector-General of Police.
President Bola Tinubu had recently appointed Tunji Disu as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police, replacing Kayode Egbetokun, who had occupied the position since 2023.
Police insiders say such changes are not unusual whenever a new IGP assumes office, as key strategic positions are often reviewed.
“Whenever a new IGP is appointed, it is normal for some positions to change. Unfortunately, he was affected,” the source added.
Hundeyin, who hails from Badagry in Lagos State, was appointed FPRO by the former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
An alumnus of Lagos State University, he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and a Master’s degree in Legal Criminology and Security Psychology from the University of Ibadan.
He also obtained a Certificate in Civil-Military Coordination from the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Training Centre in Jaji, Kaduna.
Throughout his career, Hundeyin built a reputation in police communications, previously serving as the Police Public Relations Officer at the Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos.
He also participated in the United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in 2020.
Professionally, he is affiliated with the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), the International Public Relations Association (IPRA), and the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM).
