Tehran fumes after reports that team officials were refused entry documents, escalating tensions ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Iran has sharply criticised the United States, a co-host of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, over reports that some of its football officials were denied visas for the tournament.
The dispute adds another layer of tension to Iran’s preparations for what will be its seventh World Cup appearance, amid already strained relations between both countries.
Earlier, Iran had threatened to boycott the competition and pushed for its matches to be relocated to Mexico, prompting FIFA to step in and reassure all parties of the team’s participation.
The situation has now escalated again following claims that certain members of the Iranian delegation were refused entry permits into the U.S.
Reacting strongly, Iran’s embassy in South Africa took to X (formerly Twitter) to condemn Washington, accusing it of failing in itsb duties as a host nation. The mission stressed that Iran is attending the tournament under FIFA’s authority and should not face barriers to participation.
“The incompetent @FIFAWorldCup host, USA, is failing to fulfill its responsibilities properly,” the statement read.
“We are guests of @FIFAcom, and it is FIFA’s responsibility to ensure that visas for all members are issued.”
