Kano Deputy Governor, Ex-IGP’s Abuja Homes Hit by Flood as Residents Blame Blocked Canal

Residents of an Abuja estate linked to Senator Ibrahim Bomai have raised concerns over alleged drainage blockage, calling for an investigation into the cause of the flooding.

The homes of the Kano State Deputy Governor and a former Inspector-General of Police have reportedly been affected by flooding in Abuja following heavy rainfall in the Federal Capital Territory.

The flooding, which reportedly occurred within an estate linked to Senator Ibrahim Bomai, has sparked concerns among residents over the state of drainage infrastructure and the maintenance of waterways in the area.

Residents attributed the incident to an alleged blockage of a nearby drainage canal, claiming that the obstruction restricted the free movement of rainwater and caused water to accumulate around the estate.

According to residents, the drainage channel was expected to provide an outlet for stormwater during periods of heavy rainfall. However, they alleged that its obstruction resulted in water backing up and eventually flooding parts of the estate.

The presence of prominent residents, including the Kano State Deputy Governor and a former Inspector-General of Police, has drawn additional attention to the incident and renewed calls for authorities to address Abuja's recurring drainage and flooding challenges.

Although residents have blamed the flooding on the alleged canal blockage, the exact cause of the incident has yet to be independently established. It was also unclear whether the drainage channel had been officially inspected or whether any previous complaints had been made to the relevant authorities.

The development has once again highlighted concerns about urban planning, drainage maintenance and the management of waterways across Abuja, where flooding has become a recurring problem during periods of intense rainfall.

Residents are urging the Federal Capital Territory authorities and other relevant agencies to inspect the affected drainage system, establish whether the canal was blocked and determine the circumstances that led to the flooding.

They also want any person or entity found to have obstructed the waterway in violation of relevant regulations to be held accountable.

The incident comes amid growing concerns over the need for proper drainage planning as Abuja continues to experience rapid urban development and increasingly intense rainfall.

Authorities are expected to assess the affected area and determine whether inadequate drainage capacity, poor maintenance, obstruction of waterways or other factors contributed to the flooding.
