Egor lawmaker takes over minority leadership as Edo lawmakers reshuffle principal positions during Monday’s plenary.
The Edo State House of Assembly has appointed Hon. Natasha Osawaru, representing Egor Constituency, as the new Minority Leader of the legislative chamber.
Osawaru’s emergence was announced during Monday morning’s plenary at the Assembly Complex in Benin City, where lawmakers effected a reshuffle of key leadership positions amid new alignments among the various party caucuses.
The development places Osawaru in one of the Assembly’s important leadership positions and marks a new phase in her legislative career.
The lawmaker, who is a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), previously served as Deputy Majority Leader of the House. Her elevation to the minority leadership is expected to give her a more prominent role in shaping debates, scrutinising government policies and representing the interests of the opposition caucus within the Assembly.
Osawaru has built a reputation around issues relating to grassroots development, youth empowerment and women’s participation in governance. Her legislative activities have also included advocacy on matters affecting residents of Egor Constituency and the wider Edo State.

The reshuffle comes at a politically significant period for the Edo Assembly, with lawmakers reorganising key positions and realigning responsibilities within the chamber.
Speaking after the plenary, Osawaru described her new position as a responsibility rather than merely a political title.
“This new responsibility is not a title; it is a trust. Our democracy thrives on rigorous debate, accountability, and the courage to advocate for the ordinary citizen without compromise,” she said.
She thanked the leadership of the Assembly, her colleagues and the people of Egor Constituency for their confidence and support.
The new Minority Leader also pledged to use her position to promote the development of Edo State while advancing the interests of the NDC and the people she represents.
“As Minority Leader, my commitment to the development of Edo State, the progress of our great party, the NDC, and the prosperity of the good people of Egor remains absolute,” she added.
Osawaru’s emergence is expected to strengthen her influence within the Assembly as she takes on the responsibility of leading the minority caucus and contributing to legislative oversight and policy debates in the state.
The new leadership arrangement follows the recent turbulence within the Edo State House of Assembly, which has seen changes in its principal offices and heightened political activity among lawmakers.
