26-year-old Afeez Olatunji Adewale faces federal charges of wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy after FBI-led crackdown on online predators.
A 26-year-old Nigerian, Afeez Olatunji Adewale, has been extradited to the United States to face federal prosecution over his alleged involvement in a sexual extortion scheme authorities say contributed to the death of a young American man in Pennsylvania.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania confirmed that Adewale was arrested in Nigeria in August 2023 during a sweeping FBI operation targeting international sextortion networks accused of exploiting minors online. After months of legal and diplomatic proceedings, he was formally handed over to U.S. authorities on February 13, 2026.
American officials disclosed that the extradition was carried out with the cooperation of Nigeria’s Attorney General, the Federal Ministry of Justice, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), underscoring growing cross-border collaboration in tackling cybercrime.
Adewale has been indicted on charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Prosecutors allege he participated in a scheme that coerced victims into sending money under threats related to explicit images.
Following his arrival in the United States, Adewale appeared before a federal magistrate judge in Philadelphia, where he is expected to face further court proceedings as the case moves forward. If convicted, he could face significant prison time under U.S. federal law.
