Emergency meeting in Abuja follows deadly assaults in Borno where several commanding officers and soldiers were killed, as government moves to reassess counter-terrorism strategy.
Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has summoned the country’s top military commanders to an urgent high-level security meeting in Abuja following a worrying surge in terrorist attacks on military bases, particularly in the North-East.
The emergency session, scheduled at the Ministry of Defence headquarters, brings together the nation’s key security chiefs to reassess current counter-insurgency strategies and strengthen operational responses against armed groups.
Among those invited to the meeting are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass; as well as representatives of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
The meeting comes amid reports of deadly assaults by terrorists on several military formations in Borno State. Security sources indicate that at least three commanding officers holding the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel were killed during recent attacks, alongside numerous soldiers. The violence has also left hundreds of civilians abducted as insecurity continues to grip parts of the region.
During the meeting, the Defence Minister is expected to demand a comprehensive review of ongoing operations and explore stronger tactical measures to counter insurgent threats.
Despite the recent losses, military authorities maintain that government forces have inflicted heavier casualties on the insurgents during confrontations.
The emergency security talks also follow the minister’s broader push to strengthen coordination within Nigeria’s armed forces. Recent initiatives include the introduction of regular operational briefings aimed at improving intelligence sharing and accelerating efforts to defeat terrorism, insurgency, and banditry across the country.
