Tambuwal, Abaribe, Kingibe among high-profile defectors in sweeping opposition realignment
Nine senators drawn from three opposition parties on Thursday defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on the floor of the Nigerian Senate, in a dramatic mass crossing that reshapes the balance of forces in the upper legislative chamber.
The defectors abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in a coordinated sequence of announcements that stunned the chamber and sent immediate shockwaves through Nigeria's opposition bloc.
The PDP recorded the heaviest losses, surrendering five of its senators. Former Sokoto Governor and ex-House Speaker Sen. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto South) led the PDP exodus, joined by Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo (Nasarawa South), Binos Dauda Yaroe (Adamawa South), Sen. Austin Akobundu (Abia Central), and Sen. Lawal Adamu Usman (Kaduna Central).
Labour Party lost three senators — Sen. Ireti Kingibe (FCT), Sen. Victor Umeh (Anambra Central), and Sen. Tony Nwoye (Anambra North) — while APGA lost veteran opposition senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South).
All nine declared for the ADC.
The defections cut across the South East, North West, North Central, and the Federal Capital Territory, indicating a nationally coordinated move rather than localised party dissatisfaction.
The ADC, a party that has historically operated at the periphery of Nigerian politics, emerges from Thursday's session as a significantly enlarged legislative force. Its ability to consolidate the new coalition and convert legislative numbers into grassroots electoral strength ahead of 2027 will be closely watched.
For Labour Party, the loss of Umeh — a towering figure in Igbo politics — and two Anambra senators in a single sitting represents a tangible erosion of the gains made during the 2023 Obidient wave. The PDP, still recovering from its 2023 presidential defeat, absorbs yet another body blow to its cohesion.
The Senate President is yet to formally address the defections. Further official reactions from the affected parties are expected.
