The veteran actress, who has spent about 35 years in Nollywood, says the cost of treatment has become overwhelming as she appeals to Nigerians for financial support.

Veteran Nollywood actress, Omotunde Ogundimu, has appealed to Nigerians for financial assistance to enable her to continue treatment for cervical cancer.

Ogundimu revealed that she was diagnosed with the disease in 2024 after undergoing a series of medical tests.

The actress made the disclosure during an emotional interview with fellow actress and content creator Biola Bayo, published on Wednesday.

Speaking about her health battle, Ogundimu said the illness had taken a heavy toll on her physically, emotionally and financially.

She recalled her reaction when doctors informed her of the diagnosis, saying she initially struggled to understand how she could have developed cancer.

“It was when I did those tests that they said I had cervical cancer. I said, ‘Where did I get cancer from?’ I am an easy-going person,” she said.

According to the actress, she has received assistance from several individuals, while her children have also committed much of their earnings towards caring for her.

However, she said the financial demands of her treatment had become increasingly difficult for her family to sustain.

“I no longer have the strength. I have called several people, and many have helped me. My children have also been spending all their income to take care of me. They do not have time for themselves. I thank God for them,” Ogundimu said.

The actress said she had been reluctant to publicly ask for assistance because she was aware that some people could criticise her decision.

However, she said her deteriorating condition and the severity of the pain had left her with little choice.

“I have thought about it, and I have to plead with the public finally. I know those who would abuse me will abuse me, and those who would help will help. It is just for me to be okay. The pain is too much,” she added.

35 Years in Nollywood

Ogundimu, who has spent approximately 35 years in the Nigerian film industry, also spoke about the challenges she has faced professionally in recent years.

The actress lamented the decline in acting opportunities and the low remuneration she receives despite her decades of experience.

She disclosed that she sometimes earns between ₦20,000 and ₦40,000 for acting roles, an amount she said is difficult to rely on, particularly given her current medical needs.

“I am a mother of three. I am a widow. My husband passed away in 2012. I am good at what I do, but I am no longer being called for jobs,” she said.

Appealing to colleagues and others in the industry, Ogundimu asked anyone she may have offended over the years to forgive her and consider her contribution to the development of Nollywood.

“Whoever I have offended in the movie industry should please forgive me. They should consider my journey and the foundation of this industry,” she said.

She further expressed frustration over the fees offered for her work despite her extensive experience.

“Anytime I am called to set, I am offered N20,000, N40,000. And you dare not complain. I have 35 years of experience in this industry,” she said.

Ogundimu’s appeal has drawn attention to the often-overlooked financial challenges faced by veteran actors, particularly those dealing with serious health conditions after years of contributing to Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
