NDC candidate promises inclusive governance, rejects “spare tyre” role for vice president, pledges joint decision-making and reforms

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has formally unveiled former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 general election, promising a new model of shared leadership if elected.

Speaking at the party’s national convention in Abuja on Saturday, Obi said his administration would break away from the long-standing tradition of sidelining vice presidents, insisting Kwankwaso would play a central, active role in governance.

“The government we intend to form will no longer be one where the vice president is treated as a spare tyre,” Obi declared, emphasizing that both leaders would operate as partners.

He stressed that decision-making under an NDC government would be collaborative, with broad consultations and joint responsibility at the highest level. According to Obi, this approach is key to delivering effective governance and accelerating national development.

“We want to build a nation where leadership works in partnership for the country’s greatness. Decisions will be taken collectively, and everyone necessary will be consulted,” he said.

Obi explained that Kwankwaso’s selection was driven by shared priorities, particularly in education, security, and social inclusion—areas he described as critical to Nigeria’s progress.

“He believes strongly in education and security, and together we will ensure real progress in these sectors,” Obi added while inviting Kwankwaso to address delegates.

Both Obi and Kwankwaso were prominent contenders in the 2023 presidential election, finishing third and fourth respectively. Kwankwaso, who ran under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), secured victory in Kano State, where he maintains strong political influence.

The duo defected to the NDC on May 3 after exiting the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal uncertainties within the party.

Obi has also reiterated his earlier pledge to serve only a single four-year term if elected, promising to cut the cost of governance and eliminate waste in public spending as part of his reform agenda.
