Police chief promises professionalism, voter protection, and inclusive participation as stakeholders raise concerns over violence and misinformation.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has engaged key civil society organisations (CSOs) in a strategic meeting to address security concerns ahead of the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.

The meeting, held as part of ongoing efforts to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process, brought together prominent civil society leaders led by Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC).

During the discussion, the CSOs highlighted critical issues that could impact the integrity of the election, including voter safety, the threat of political violence, the spread of misinformation, and the need to guarantee participation for vulnerable groups, particularly persons with disabilities.

Rafsanjani and his delegation stressed the importance of proactive security measures and collaboration between security agencies and civil society actors to build public trust and prevent potential disruptions.

In response, IGP Disu assured the delegation that the Nigeria Police Force is fully committed to addressing the concerns raised. He emphasized that adequate security personnel would be deployed across polling units and flashpoints in the state to maintain order before, during, and after the election.

The police chief also reiterated the Force’s dedication to professionalism, impartiality, and neutrality, assuring Nigerians that officers would operate within the confines of the law and electoral guidelines.

“We are committed to ensuring that every eligible voter can exercise their right without fear or intimidation,” Disu said, adding that special arrangements would be made to support persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups during the voting process.

He further called on political actors, stakeholders, and residents of Osun State to support peaceful conduct throughout the electoral period. According to him, sustained cooperation between security agencies and civil society—especially through the sharing of credible intelligence—will be crucial to preventing violence and ensuring a transparent process.

The meeting underscores the growing role of civil society in Nigeria’s electoral system, particularly in advocating accountability, voter education, and election monitoring.

As preparations intensify ahead of the August 15 poll, stakeholders say continued dialogue and coordination among all parties will be key to delivering a free, fair, and credible election in Osun State.
