Osun Monarch Sparks Debate, Says Nigerians May Push for Third Term for Tinubu

Monarch praises President’s reforms, argues growing public support could fuel calls for constitutional change

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has ignited fresh political debate after suggesting that Nigerians could eventually demand a constitutional amendment to allow President Bola Tinubu to remain in office beyond the current two-term limit.

The monarch made the remarks on Sunday during celebrations marking Tinubu’s 74th birthday, portraying the President as a transformative leader whose policies may inspire a groundswell of public support for continuity in governance.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Alli, the Oluwo described Tinubu as a decisive reformer with a clear vision for Nigeria’s future. He argued that the President’s leadership style and policy direction could prompt citizens to advocate for an extension of his tenure.

“Many Nigerians may call for a constitutional review to enable Tinubu to serve more than two terms in office. He is a leader who knows what he is doing,” the monarch said.

Backing his position, the traditional ruler pointed to recent economic indicators, including what he described as a strengthening outlook for the naira and a significant rise in foreign reserves. According to him, reserves have climbed to between $49.5 billion and $50.45 billion as of early 2026, reflecting improved fiscal stability compared to previous years.

He attributed these gains to key reforms introduced by the administration, such as exchange rate unification, increased oil production, and renewed investor confidence. The Oluwo also commended efforts to deepen local government autonomy, boost state allocations, expand road infrastructure, and enhance the distribution of palliatives at the grassroots level.

The monarch further argued that while previous governments initiated similar reforms, many failed to sustain them under pressure. He praised Tinubu’s resolve in pushing through difficult decisions despite economic headwinds.

“You are not yet a capable leader until you take decisions and stand by them,” he stated, emphasizing that resilience is a defining trait of the current administration.

Although Tinubu marked his birthday quietly amid ongoing economic challenges, the Oluwo expressed confidence that the long-term benefits of the administration’s policies are beginning to take shape, with greater stability expected as Nigeria advances into the next phase of its recovery.
