Governor says permanent NAF presence will strengthen safety and support regional stability as defence chiefs commend initiative

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Friday formally handed over a newly constructed Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Administrative Complex in Umuahia to the Federal Government, describing the project as a significant step toward strengthening security and safeguarding lives and property in the state.

The facility was received by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Kelvin Aneke, alongside the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (retd.), during a ceremony held in the state capital.

Speaking at the event, Otti said the establishment of a permanent Nigerian Air Force presence in Abia reflects his administration’s firm commitment to improving the state’s security architecture. He stressed that protecting residents and visitors remains a top priority, adding that the project highlights the gains of collaboration between federal and state governments in tackling security challenges.

The governor also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the Nigerian Air Force for their support, assuring that the state government would continue to provide the necessary backing to ensure effective operations in Abia.

In his remarks, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Aneke, described the complex as a landmark investment in national security. He noted that the facility would enhance military operations, improve security across the South-East, and contribute to the region’s socio-economic development. He also commended Otti for what he described as a lasting contribution to Nigeria’s security framework.

Similarly, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (retd.), praised the governor’s proactive approach to security through strategic investments. He emphasised that national security requires strong collaboration among governments, security agencies, and citizens.

Musa urged officers deployed to the new base to uphold professionalism and ensure their presence promotes peace, stability, and development in Abia State.

Earlier, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Uba (retd.), said the project was driven by the administration’s vision of making security the foundation for sustainable development. He added that the new complex would strengthen the state’s capacity to respond to emerging security challenges.
