Palm Sunday Massacre in Jos: 28 Killed in Fresh Plateau Attack

Gunmen storm Angwan Rukuba community in evening raid; Daily Observer had earlier reported initial assault as violence escalates

At least 28 people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a deadly Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, Plateau State, deepening fears over renewed insecurity in the region.

The assault, which occurred between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2026, is believed to have been carried out by heavily armed gunmen who invaded the Gari Ya Waye community within Angwan Rukuba, opening fire on residents.

The attack plunged the area into chaos, with eyewitnesses describing scenes of panic as families fled and victims were left in the aftermath of the violence. Survivors and local sources say the casualty figure may rise as more injured persons receive treatment.

Daily Observer had earlier reported the initial invasion around the Bauchi Ring Road axis near Angwan Rukuba, where multiple casualties were first feared. The latest development confirms a far higher death toll, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the area in recent times.

The timing of the killings —on Palm Sunday—has intensified grief across the community, as residents mourn loved ones lost during a significant religious observance.

As of press time, security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the attack or confirm the number of casualties. However, authorities are expected to launch investigations into the incident while residents continue to call for urgent intervention to prevent further bloodshed.

The latest violence underscores ongoing security concerns in Plateau State, where sporadic attacks have continued to threaten lives and livelihoods.
