Presidential candidate lauds entertainer’s health advocacy and ‘Desert Warrior’s’ legacy of resilience, calls for renewed national unity and security

Peter Obi has paid glowing tribute to veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, and renowned environmentalist Newton Jibunoh, describing both men as exceptional Nigerians whose lives embody courage, patriotism, and service to humanity.

Obi made the remarks during a recent visit to Lagos, where he attended the launch of “999: The Memoir of Charly Boy,” and later travelled to Asaba to tour the newly established Newton Jibunoh Centre and Museum.

Reflecting on Charly Boy’s life and legacy, Obi commended the iconic entertainer for transforming his personal health struggle into a national advocacy campaign. He noted that as a prostate cancer survivor, Charly Boy has used his platform to raise awareness about men’s health, particularly the importance of early detection and access to proper treatment.

According to Obi, such advocacy is both timely and vital, urging greater national support for initiatives that promote public health awareness and save lives.

Turning to Newton Jibunoh, widely known as the “Desert Warrior,” Obi described him as a living legend whose extraordinary expeditions across the Sahara Desert stand as a testament to human endurance and determination. He praised Jibunoh’s lifelong commitment to environmental causes and his role in inspiring generations of Nigerians to pursue bold visions despite daunting challenges.

Obi further noted that Jibunoh’s historic journeys evoke memories of a time when travel across Nigeria and beyond was considerably safer, stressing the urgent need for the country to reclaim that sense of security.

He emphasised that rebuilding a united, secure, and prosperous Nigeria requires collective effort, visionary leadership, and a renewed commitment to national values.

Obi concluded by encouraging Nigerians to draw inspiration from the lives of both men, whose contributions continue to shape conversations around health, environment, and national development.
