The former Anambra governor visited communities affected by deadly attacks, prayed with survivors and urged the Federal Government to act more decisively to protect lives and close ungoverned spaces.

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has visited communities affected by recent deadly attacks in Benue State, expressing solidarity with victims and calling on the Federal Government to strengthen security across the country.

Obi made the visit on Friday, August 14, 2026, as he toured Otukpo-Nobi and Efeyi-Ugboju, two communities affected by recent violence that reportedly left several people dead, injured or missing.

At Otukpo-Nobi, Obi was informed that more than 10 people had been killed or remained missing following the attack, while several others sustained injuries and were receiving treatment in hospital.

The former governor joined residents at the site of a mass burial for victims, where he prayed with community members and mourned those who lost their lives.

He later visited injured survivors in hospital, offering words of encouragement and praying for their recovery.

Obi also visited Efeyi-Ugboju, where residents reportedly lost more than 13 people in another attack, with several others sustaining injuries.

During the visit, he was further informed that 14 people had allegedly been kidnapped earlier that morning along Ankpechi Road, highlighting the continuing security challenges confronting communities in the area.

Speaking during the visits, Obi expressed concern over the recurring attacks and the growing number of communities exposed to violence.

He urged the Federal Government to demonstrate greater commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring that Nigerians can live and conduct their daily activities without fear.

According to him, the protection of lives and property remains one of the most fundamental responsibilities of government.

Obi also called for urgent measures to identify and secure ungoverned spaces that, he said, could serve as breeding grounds for criminal activities and insecurity.

He stressed that security should not be treated as a political issue, but as a national responsibility requiring sustained attention, resources and effective coordination among security agencies.

The former governor's visit comes amid renewed concerns over attacks, kidnappings and other forms of insecurity affecting communities in Benue and other parts of the country.

For residents who have lost family members, suffered injuries or been forced to live under the threat of further attacks, Obi's visit provided an opportunity to draw national attention to their plight.

The former governor's appeal adds to growing calls for stronger security measures, better protection of vulnerable communities and more effective efforts to prevent attacks before they occur.
