The NDC presidential candidate says combining faith-based education with science and technology can help prepare Nigerian youths for the demands of a changing world.

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has visited the Sheikh Muhammad Sambo Memorial Islamic Institute in Rigachikun, Kaduna State, where he commended the institution for combining Islamic education with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Obi made the remarks during a visit to the institute shortly after returning to Nigeria from London.

The former Anambra State governor said he arrived in Abuja on Saturday morning aboard an Air Peace flight, which he noted landed about 20 minutes ahead of schedule. He said he proceeded directly to Kaduna after his arrival.

According to Obi, the visit was particularly significant because he had previously visited the Islamic institute twice and had supported some of its activities in his personal capacity.

He expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded by the institution, particularly its effort to integrate religious education with modern scientific and technological learning.

Obi described the approach as a form of holistic education that could help equip young Nigerians with both strong moral values and practical knowledge needed to navigate an increasingly technology-driven world.

He stressed that education should go beyond the acquisition of certificates, arguing that young people must be equipped with relevant skills and knowledge that can enable them to contribute meaningfully to society and the economy.

The NDC candidate also linked educational development to broader efforts to improve the standard of living in Nigeria, noting that investments in human capital, healthcare and other critical sectors are essential to creating opportunities for citizens.

Obi reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives focused on education, healthcare, human capital development and poverty reduction.

He also called for greater national inclusion, stressing that Nigerians should have a sense of belonging and an equal stake in the country regardless of their religion, ethnicity, region or political affiliation.

The visit comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to intensify, with Obi among the politicians positioning themselves for the presidential contest.

The former governor has consistently highlighted education, healthcare, human capital development and poverty reduction among areas requiring greater attention in Nigeria.

At the Kaduna institute, his emphasis was on the importance of developing an education system that preserves values while giving young people the scientific, technological and practical skills required in the modern economy.
