The 23-year-old defender was fined €14,400 and banned from driving for eight months after being convicted of driving at more than three times Spain’s legal alcohol limit.

Real Madrid have opened disciplinary proceedings against defender Raúl Asencio following his conviction for drink-driving, with head coach José Mourinho warning that the player’s conduct off the pitch could damage the reputation of the Spanish giants.

The 23-year-old centre-back was convicted after he was found to have been driving at more than three times the legal alcohol limit during an incident on August 16 in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria.

A court fined Asencio €14,400 ($16,700) and suspended his driving licence for eight months, according to a court source.

The defender is also due to appear in another court case in Gran Canaria this week over the alleged non-consensual sharing of a sexual video dating back to 2023.

Three former Real Madrid reserve players are also on trial over allegations that they recorded and distributed the video, with proceedings scheduled for September 3, 4 and 7.

Mourinho defended Asencio’s professionalism at the club but made it clear that the latest incidents were unacceptable.

“I’m not happy. Everyone makes mistakes, but when they pile up, it’s not the same,” Mourinho said.

The manager stressed that Real Madrid players represent the club both on and off the pitch and are expected to conduct themselves accordingly.

Spanish media have reported that Asencio expects to be cleared in the video-sharing case if the two women featured in the recording, who were aged 16 and 18 at the time, formally forgive him. However, the allegations remain subject to the ongoing court proceedings.

Asencio has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury in July and has yet to make Mourinho’s matchday squad, despite playing regularly for Real Madrid during the previous two seasons.

The club’s disciplinary action adds further uncertainty to the defender’s immediate future as he faces both internal proceedings and an ongoing legal case.
