Joint operation involving DSS, Army, and ONSA-backed Hybrid Forces foils suspected plot to rearm criminal gangs

Security operatives have recorded a major breakthrough in the fight against insecurity, intercepting a cache of illegal arms and ammunition allegedly destined for criminal groups operating in and around Kogi State.

The Kogi State Government disclosed that the success followed a coordinated, intelligence-driven operation involving local security units, Hybrid Forces under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Army’s 12 Brigade.

According to officials, the operation culminated in the arrest of three suspects in Sokoto State after more than two weeks of covert surveillance. The suspects were reportedly tracked across multiple locations based on credible intelligence indicating the movement of weapons in a Golf 2 vehicle.

Security agencies later impounded the vehicle in Kabba, Kogi State, where the arms were believed to be headed.

Items recovered from the suspects include two AK-47 rifles, several magazines, 67 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, two pistols, 12 rounds of pistol ammunition, and military uniforms suspected to have been intended for use in criminal operations.

Authorities said preliminary intelligence suggests the weapons were being procured by criminal elements attempting to restock following recent setbacks, including the neutralisation of a notorious bandit leader earlier this month.

Describing the interception as a significant victory against banditry and kidnapping, the state government assured residents that surveillance and security operations have been intensified across key areas. Investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend other members of the suspected arms trafficking network.
