Spanish Midfielder Rodri Joins Barcelona from Manchester City in £65.4m Transfer

Spanish midfielder signs contract until 2030 after seven trophy-filled seasons at Manchester City

Barcelona have completed the signing of Spanish midfielder Rodri from Manchester City in a deal reportedly worth £65.4 million (€76.5 million).

The Catalan club confirmed the transfer on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, announcing that the 30-year-old midfielder has signed a contract that will keep him at Camp Nou until June 2030.

Rodri leaves Manchester City after a remarkable seven-year spell during which he established himself as one of the most influential midfielders in world football. He made 298 appearances for the Premier League club and helped them win 14 major trophies, including four Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

The Spaniard joined City from Atlético Madrid in 2019 and quickly became a key figure in Pep Guardiola's side. His importance to the team was highlighted in the 2023 Champions League final, when he scored the winning goal against Inter Milan to secure City's first European title.

Rodri's individual achievements have also been significant. He won the 2024 Ballon d'Or after playing a central role in Manchester City's success and has continued to be regarded as one of the world's leading defensive midfielders.

His international career has also reached new heights. Rodri captained Spain to victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and was named the tournament's best player, further enhancing his reputation as a leader and big-game performer.

Barcelona's decision to bring him to the club represents one of the most significant moves of their summer transfer window. The Spanish giants will hope Rodri's experience, composure and ability to control games can strengthen their midfield as they compete on multiple fronts.

Manchester City confirmed his departure after seven seasons, while Barcelona said the midfielder had committed his future to the club until 2030. City added that the transfer remains subject to international clearance.

Speaking at his Barcelona presentation, Rodri expressed his excitement about beginning a new chapter in his career and pledged to give his best for the club.

His arrival is expected to provide Barcelona with additional experience and leadership in midfield while also giving the team a player capable of dictating the tempo of matches.

Rodri now begins a new chapter in Spain, returning to La Liga after seven seasons in England and joining a Barcelona side with high expectations for the coming campaign.
