Forward hails interim coach Eric Chelle for building unity and character during AFCON campaign

Super Eagles forward Akor Adams has praised interim head coach Eric Chelle for his profound impact on the Nigerian squad during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Adams described the French tactician as instrumental not only in shaping the team tactically but also in helping the players grow as better individuals beyond football.

Speaking in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the striker revealed that the Super Eagles arrived at the tournament with ambitions of winning the gold medal, but remained proud of their overall performance.

“Although we came for the gold and we did not get it, we are proud of what we have been able to achieve,” Adams said.

“We are a very strong group. Everybody is going home with a stronger bond and as a better person.”

Making his first appearance at a major international tournament, Adams singled out Chelle for special recognition, expressing deep gratitude for the coach’s leadership over the past three weeks.

He also thanked the coach for giving him the opportunity to represent Nigeria on the continental stage.

Adams further opened up about the personal challenge he faced during the competition, revealing that his mother fell ill while the tournament was ongoing. He disclosed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) medical team provided crucial support during the difficult period.

The Super Eagles secured a record-extending ninth Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties following a goalless draw at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca on January 17, 2026.
