Adeleke cries foul as salary account is placed on “Post No Debit” restriction, with no official explanation yet from anti-graft agency

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed a bank account belonging to the Osun State Government under restriction, effectively halting transactions just ten days before the state’s governorship election.

Documents seen by journalists indicate that the account, domiciled with First Bank and reportedly used for the payment of workers’ salaries, has been put on a “Post No Debit” status, preventing any withdrawals or financial activity.

The development comes shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke publicly raised concerns that the anti-graft agency was planning to freeze the state’s accounts, including those linked to key government officials.

Reacting to the situation, the Osun State Government described the action as a deliberate attempt to disrupt governance and create financial strain in the lead-up to the August 15 election. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, said the move, if confirmed, could significantly affect the smooth running of government operations.

Governor Adeleke also questioned the legality of the action, insisting that the EFCC does not have the statutory authority to freeze state government accounts without due process. He maintained that there was no valid legal justification for such a decision.

Meanwhile, a source within the state government, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the restriction had already taken effect.

“I can confirm that the account has been frozen by the EFCC. This is no longer speculation. The governor will soon address the public to provide further details,” the source said.

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had yet to issue an official statement explaining the reason for the restriction or confirming the action. The lack of clarity surrounding the move has further heightened political tension in the state as the election approaches.
