Ex-president endorsed in absentia at relocated Abuja convention as factional crisis deepens within PDP
The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki has declared former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, despite his absence at the event.
Jonathan’s nomination was ratified on Saturday during a special national convention ultimately held at the party’s office in Area 10, Garki, Abuja, following a dramatic disruption at the original venue.
The convention had initially been scheduled to take place at the A-Class Park and Event Centre. However, access to the venue was blocked by police officers early Saturday, effectively preventing the gathering from holding there.
The disruption followed a directive from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), which instructed hotels and event centres to engage only with political party leaderships officially recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The PDP faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike currently holds that recognition.
Forced to improvise, Turaki’s faction swiftly relocated the convention to its party office in Area 10, where proceedings continued behind closed doors.
Although Jonathan did not attend the convention in person, his certificate of return was received on his behalf by Fred Agbedi, a member of the House of Representatives representing Bayelsa State.
Party insiders say a date will be announced later for the formal presentation of the party’s flag to the former president, as the faction pushes ahead with its 2027 plans despite ongoing internal divisions.
