Nigerian outrage and threats of protest force removal of December 22 concert amid renewed tensions over attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

South African Grammy-winning singer Tyla has removed Lagos from the schedule of her APOP World Tour, just days after her planned December 22 concert in Nigeria drew backlash and boycott calls over renewed xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.

A check of the singer’s official tour website on Friday confirmed that the Lagos stop — previously listed as her only Nigerian performance — is no longer part of the itinerary. While other dates across Europe, North America, and South Africa remain unchanged, Nigeria has been quietly dropped from the tour lineup.

Tyla had earlier announced the tour with Lagos as a key stop, with the tour expected to wrap up in South Africa — Cape Town on January 4 and Johannesburg on January 9.

The development follows intense reactions from Nigerians online, where many criticised the planned concert in light of ongoing reports of attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa. Some argued that allowing South African artistes to perform in Nigeria under such circumstances would amount to ignoring the plight of affected Nigerians.

Others, however, pushed back against the calls for a boycott, insisting that entertainers should not be held accountable for political tensions or social unrest between countries.

The situation escalated further on Thursday when controversial activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, threatened to mobilise members of his “Ratel Movement” to disrupt the concert if it went ahead.

Although Tyla and her management have yet to issue an official statement on the removal of Lagos from the tour, the decision is widely seen as a response to the growing pressure and security concerns surrounding the event.
