From Yamal to Reece James, a growing list of global stars faces fitness battles ahead of June tournament
With the World Cup fast approaching, several high-profile players are sidelined, while others are racing against time to prove their fitness.
A growing injury crisis is affecting multiple national teams as they prepare for the global showpiece in June, leaving key players facing uncertain recoveries.
According to reports, the following players are in a race against time to be fit for the tournament:
Lamine Yamal (Barcelona, Spain)
Yamal raised concerns after suffering a hamstring injury while scoring for Barcelona against Celta Vigo. However, his club remains optimistic he will recover in time for the World Cup.
Marc-André ter Stegen (Barcelona, Germany)
Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper is battling a long-term hamstring issue. The injury has disrupted his preparation, and his chances of being ready for the opening matches are increasingly slim. His absence would be a major setback.
Rodrygo (Real Madrid, Brazil)
Brazil has been dealt a major blow, with the Real Madrid forward ruled out after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in March. The injury has ended any hopes of a World Cup appearance.
Cristian Romero (Tottenham Hotspur, Argentina)
The Argentina defender is out for the remainder of the Premier League season with a knee injury. He limped off following a collision during Tottenham’s defeat to Sunderland and was visibly distressed.
Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich, Canada)
Davies is struggling with recurring muscle issues that have plagued his recent seasons. His pace is vital to Canada’s attack, but his fitness remains a major concern.
Mikel Merino (Arsenal, Spain)
The Arsenal midfielder has been sidelined since February with a fractured foot. Spain’s medical team is cautious about rushing his return.
Wataru Endo (Liverpool, Japan)
Japan’s captain is recovering from knee and ankle injuries sustained in February, which required surgery.
