Osun governor raises alarm over alleged violence, urges neutrality of security agencies as political tension escalates before August 15 election

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu against any attempt to interfere in the forthcoming August 15 governorship election, stressing that the people of the state will strongly resist any effort to undermine their democratic will.

Speaking to supporters on Monday, Adeleke cautioned that manipulating the electoral process could plunge the state into a political crisis. He drew parallels with the aftermath of the disputed 1983 governorship election in Ondo State, which sparked widespread unrest and violence.

The governor also raised concerns over what he described as growing insecurity linked to political activities in the state. He alleged that recent attacks targeting members of the Accord Party resulted in the deaths of seven people, left more than 20 others injured, and led to the detention of over 60 individuals.

Adeleke further accused some security operatives of complicity, claiming that certain police officers were aiding thugs allegedly affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC). He called on President Tinubu to ensure that all security agencies operate with strict neutrality and professionalism throughout the election period.

“We need a level playing field,” the governor said, insisting that only a free, fair, and credible election can guarantee peace and stability in Osun State.

In response, the APC has firmly denied allegations of election rigging and involvement in violence. The ruling party dismissed the claims as baseless, maintaining that it remains committed to a peaceful democratic process.

With both sides trading accusations, political tension continues to build in Osun as residents prepare for what is expected to be a closely watched and potentially decisive election.
