FRSC says speeding and wrongful overtaking caused the crash involving a Mitsubishi Canter and a HOWO truck in Ogun State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of four people in a fatal road crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The crash occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, around Straight Gate School, Ipara Remo, along the Ibadan-Lagos route.

According to the FRSC, eight people were involved in the crash. Four male adults were killed, one person sustained injuries, while three others escaped unhurt.

The accident involved a blue Mitsubishi Canter with registration number FGE 753 XA and an ash-coloured HOWO truck with registration number T-695 KT.

Preliminary findings by the FRSC identified speeding and wrongful overtaking as the primary causes of the crash, with driver fatigue also cited as a contributing factor.

The FRSC Ogun State Sector Command spokesperson, Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, said the Mitsubishi Canter was travelling at high speed when its driver attempted to overtake and subsequently rammed into the moving HOWO truck.

Odunsi said the rescue team received the distress report at about 4:33 a.m. and arrived at the scene six minutes later.

He added that the injured victim was rescued and taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical treatment, while the bodies of the four deceased victims were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara.

The damaged vehicles were subsequently handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Isara Division, for further investigation.

The Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to exercise caution and avoid speeding, driving while fatigued and dangerous overtaking, particularly during early-morning journeys.

Ogunjobi also advised motorists embarking on long-distance trips to get adequate rest before driving and to overtake only when it is safe and permitted.
