Mexico Make Statement at Azteca, Defeat South Africa 2-0 in Fiery World Cup 2026 Opener

Quiñones and Jiménez seal historic win as three red cards and emotional comeback goal headline dramatic opening clash in Mexico City.

Co-hosts Mexico launched their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in commanding fashion, beating South Africa 2-0 in a dramatic opening match at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

Roared on by over 80,000 home supporters, Mexico asserted early control with goals from Julián Quiñones and veteran forward Raúl Jiménez, securing a crucial three points and ending a frustrating streak of seven winless World Cup opening matches.

The encounter was as intense as it was historic, producing three red cards — the most ever in a World Cup opener. South Africa were reduced to nine men following dismissals for Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane, while Mexico captain César Montes also saw red late in the game.

Jiménez’s goal carried deep emotional weight, marking his first World Cup strike and a significant milestone in his inspiring return from the serious skull injury that threatened his career in 2020.

The match followed a vibrant opening ceremony featuring global stars such as Shakira and Burna Boy, officially ushering in the expanded 48-team tournament.

Mexico now sit top of Group A and will face South Korea next, while South Africa aim to recover when they take on the Czech Republic.
