Nigeria Police Seize 195 Vehicles in Crackdown on Number Plate, Registration Violations

CP Giwa Leads Statewide Enforcement, Warns Offenders of Imminent Prosecution

The men of the Nigerian Police Officers, Enugu State Police Command has impounded no fewer than 195 vehicles for violations related to registration and number plates, as part of a renewed enforcement drive across the state.

The operation, led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, was carried out on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, in line with a nationwide directive banning unregistered vehicles and the use of improper number plates.

According to the Command, the affected vehicles were found to be unregistered or bearing covered, defaced, obscured, unauthorized, or improperly affixed number plates. Others had only one plate instead of the legally required two.

Police authorities confirmed that all offenders will be charged to court and prosecuted in accordance with the National Road Traffic Regulations and other relevant laws.

CP Giwa commended officers involved in the exercise for maintaining professionalism, while reiterating the obligation of motorists to comply with vehicle registration and identification laws. He warned that the enforcement would be sustained, with zero tolerance for violations.

The police chief also referenced a recent directive by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, mandating strict enforcement nationwide. He noted that unregistered vehicles and fake or altered number plates pose serious security risks and are often linked to criminal activities.

While assuring the public of fair enforcement, Giwa cautioned police personnel against misconduct during operations, stressing that any officer found engaging in extortion or harassment would face severe disciplinary action.

He urged all motorists to regularize their vehicle documents and ensure proper use of number plates, warning that non-compliance would attract legal consequences.
