Former presidential candidate cites President’s airport comment as proof of failed electricity promises, urges Nigerians to reject “incompetent leadership”

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has renewed his criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seizing on a recent remark about electricity during the President’s visit to Plateau State as evidence of unmet campaign promises.

In a post on social media, Obi referenced Tinubu’s comment in Jos, where the President joked about cutting his visit short due to a lack of electricity at the airport. Obi argued that the statement underscores his long-standing position that Nigerians should not support leaders who fail to deliver consistent power supply.

“Tinubu in Jos confirms my ‘Don’t Vote for Me’ prediction on power supply,” Obi wrote, reiterating his earlier stance that any government unable to ensure stable electricity within its first term does not deserve re-election.

Obi further claimed that when Tinubu assumed office, Nigeria’s power generation stood at over 4,000 megawatts with relatively lower tariffs. He alleged that since then, electricity supply has declined while tariffs have increased, worsening the burden on citizens and businesses.

The former Anambra State governor also criticised what he described as a disconnect between leadership and the people, arguing that the President’s remark reflected a lack of urgency in addressing a critical national issue.

He called on Nigerians to reject “incompetent leaders” and demand accountability, insisting that governance must prioritise the welfare of citizens over political rhetoric.

Obi’s comments add to growing opposition reactions surrounding Tinubu’s visit to Plateau State, where critics have also faulted the President for not engaging more directly with victims of recent violence in the region.
