Police say a senior Ambrose Alli University lecturer was found dead in a hotel room in Ekpoma after allegedly lodging with a 21-year-old woman.
A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, with police arresting three people as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the incident occurred on Sunday, October 5, 2026, after Uwuigbe allegedly checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the woman was allegedly sent out to purchase water, but returned to find the lecturer lying motionless on the bed.
The incident was reported to the police at about 8pm, prompting an investigation into what led to the lecturer’s death. Ikoedem said the hotel owner, manager and Jacob were arrested in connection with the case, while Uwuigbe’s remains were deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
The circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear, and the police have not established that the alleged sexual encounter caused Uwuigbe’s death. Investigators are expected to rely on medical findings and other evidence as they work to determine what happened inside the hotel room.
Confirming Uwuigbe’s employment, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the deceased was a member of the institution’s staff but stressed that the incident happened away from the university premises.
He described the matter as a private incident involving activities outside the institution.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the circumstances of the lecturer’s death and determine whether any offence was committed. The three people arrested are expected to assist investigators as the case progresses.
