Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle lost her father, Wing Commander E. O. Adekunle, in a 2006 military plane crash. Twenty years later, just 16 days after her wedding, she lost her husband, Squadron Leader Ahamefule Man-Ugwueje, in another Air Force crash.
Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle had already lost her father, a Nigerian Air Force pilot, in a military aircraft crash. Just 16 days after marrying another Air Force pilot, she lost her husband in another crash.
For Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle, the Nigerian Air Force has been woven into her family story for much of her life — but so too has the devastating pain of losing loved ones in military aircraft crashes.
Twenty years after her father died in a military aircraft accident, tragedy has struck her family again.
This time, it was her husband, Squadron Leader Ahamefule Aham Man-Ugwueje, who died in a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Ondo State.
The heartbreaking sequence of events has left a family mourning a loss that echoes a tragedy from two decades ago.
A father lost in 2006
On September 17, 2006, tragedy struck the Adekunle family when Wing Commander E. O. Adekunle, a Nigerian Air Force officer, was killed in the crash of a military aircraft in Benue State.
The Nigerian Air Force Dornier 228, carrying senior military officers, crashed in the Oko area of Vandeikya Local Government Area while travelling towards Cross River State.
Thirteen military officers reportedly died in the crash.
Among them was Wing Commander Adekunle, who was serving as the aircraft's co-pilot.
His death left behind a grieving family and a daughter who would grow up carrying the memory of a father who had left for a military flight but never returned home.
Twenty years later, another loss
In 2026, Adekunle's daughter, Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle, began a new chapter of her life.
According to reports following the latest Nigerian Air Force crash, she married Squadron Leader Ahamefule Aham Man-Ugwueje on September 19, 2026.
For the young couple, the wedding was meant to be the beginning of a life together.
Instead, just 16 days later, tragedy returned.
On October 5, 2026, Squadron Leader Man-Ugwueje was among the Nigerian Air Force personnel killed when NAF 931 crashed at Igbokoda in Ondo State.
He was serving as the aircraft's co-pilot.
The loss came barely more than two weeks after his wedding to Damilola.
A devastating family connection
The circumstances surrounding the tragedy have drawn particular attention because both sides of the marriage were connected to the Nigerian Air Force.
Man-Ugwueje was reportedly the son of retired Group Captain Man-Ugwueje.
His wife, Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle, is reported to be the daughter of the late Wing Commander E. O. Adekunle, who died in the 2006 crash.

That means two Air Force families, connected through marriage, are now united by another devastating loss.
For Damilola, the tragedy carries a deeply personal dimension.
She had experienced the loss of her father in a military aircraft crash as a child. Two decades later, after marrying an Air Force pilot herself, she has been forced to confront the same kind of tragedy again — this time as a wife.
Her father died in 2006.
Her husband died in 2026.
Both were Nigerian Air Force officers. Both were serving as co-pilots. And both lost their lives in military aircraft crashes.
A new widow just days after her wedding
The circumstances make the loss particularly painful.
Damilola had been married for only 16 days when her husband died.
What should have been the early days of a marriage filled with plans, celebrations and hopes for the future have instead become days of mourning.
For families of military personnel, the risks of service are understood. But knowing the dangers does little to soften the pain when a loved one does not return from a mission.
The deaths of Wing Commander Adekunle and Squadron Leader Man-Ugwueje, separated by 20 years, have now become part of the same family story.
A tragedy that spans generations
The story is more than the loss of two military officers at different points in Nigeria's history.
It is the story of a daughter who lost her father to an Air Force crash, only to lose her husband to another two decades later.
It is also the story of two families who gave members of their lives to military service and have now been left to grieve.
As tributes continue to emerge following the Ondo crash, the Adekunle and Man-Ugwueje families are confronting a loss that is difficult to put into words.
For Damilola, the memories of September 17, 2006, and October 5, 2026, will forever be connected.
Two decades apart, two military aircraft crashes took away two men from the same family story.
Wing Commander E. O. Adekunle left home for a military flight in 2006 and never returned.
Twenty years later, Squadron Leader Ahamefule Aham Man-Ugwueje began his own military flight — and never returned either.
The tragedy has left behind a grieving young widow, two bereaved families and a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve in the Nigerian Air Force.
