Eight national officers, driver regain freedom weeks after abduction along Imo highway; group thanks God, keeps silent on ransom
Eight national officers of the Scripture Union (SU) of Nigeria have regained their freedom after spending 21 days in captivity following their abduction by gunmen in Imo State.
The victims were released on July 5, weeks after they were kidnapped on June 14 while returning from the organisation’s national conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe.
They were abducted along the Orlu–Mgbidi Road as they travelled from Okigwe, Imo State, to Ibadan, Oyo State.
Those freed include Oluwatomisin Abolarin, Ebenezer Ige, Ola Ige, Ernest Onyenagbagha, Elijah Chukwudi, Cosmas Udoh, Olumide Ayemobola, and their driver, Adekunle Jegede.
Confirming their release in a statement, the SU National Chairman, Willy Onu, expressed gratitude to God, noting that all eight victims were freed safely and in good health.
He also appreciated members of the Christian organisation for their prayers, financial support, and steadfast commitment throughout the period of captivity.
According to Onu, the successful release underscored the power of collective faith, resilience, and the sacrifices made by members of the union across the country.
However, he did not disclose whether any ransom was paid to secure their freedom.
The release brings an end to a three-week ordeal for the officials of the interdenominational Christian movement. Authorities are yet to provide details on the circumstances surrounding their release or any arrests linked to the abduction.
