Thailand School Shooting: Six Dead as Student Gunman Opens Fire in Nonthaburi

Three teachers and three students were killed on Friday after a student allegedly opened fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, one of Thailand’s largest secondary schools, located in Nonthaburi Province, north of Bangkok.

Police said at least 15 others were injured, with two victims in critical condition, making it one of the country’s deadliest school shootings in recent years.

The attack occurred during school hours, sending students and staff scrambling for safety. Videos from inside the school showed frightened students taking cover under desks as gunshots rang out, while teachers and emergency responders evacuated survivors from the campus.

Authorities later confirmed that the situation had been brought under control.

Police spokesperson Trairong Phiwphan said the suspected gunman remains in critical condition, correcting earlier reports that he had died.

Investigators recovered a handgun and ammunition from the scene and believe the weapon belonged to one of the suspect’s relatives. However, inquiries are ongoing to determine how the student gained access to the firearm.

Emergency services transported multiple casualties to nearby hospitals as police launched a full investigation into the motive behind the attack. Officials said the suspect had been living with adult relatives rather than his parents, while forensic teams continued examining evidence at the scene.

The tragedy has reignited concerns over gun violence in Thailand, where civilian firearm ownership is among the highest in Southeast Asia. The country has witnessed several deadly shootings in recent years, including the 2022 childcare centre massacre that claimed 36 lives, most of them children.

Authorities have pledged a thorough investigation, while counselling services are being provided for students, staff and families affected by the attack.

The latest incident is expected to intensify calls for tighter firearm controls and stronger school security measures across Thailand.
